EUGENE, Ore. - Senior Andrew Putnam and junior Josh Anderson had strong finishes for the Pepperdine men's golf team on Tuesday at the Oregon Duck Invitational, but the Waves weren't able to get out of seventh place in the final team standings.
Pepperdine began the day in seventh but couldn't make up any ground at the par-72 Eugene Country Club despite shooting a 290, the team's best round of the tournament. The Waves finished at 883 (295-298-290). They couldn't knock off any of the other four schools ranked among Golfweek's top 40, but they did finish better than the three other West Coast Conference schools in the field (San Francisco, Santa Clara and Portland).
"It was a little disappointing," Pepperdine Coach John Geiberger said. "After our top two guys, we didn't get a lot, so it's frustrating. We just didn't put together the team score we needed. We're trying to work hard and do the right things. But we're only getting maybe three scores a round. Hopefully this is the dip in our season and we bounce back. It's back to the drawing board. We've got a couple of big tournaments coming up so whatever lineup is in there has to be ready to play."
Anderson (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) had his second below-par round of the event with a 2-under 70. It wasn't enough to move him up the leaderboard, however, and he tied for seventh place overall with a 4-under 212 (70-72-70). Anderson had a double-bogey on his third hole of the round but then posted four birdies the rest of the way. He recorded his fourth top 10 finish of the season.
"Josh played solid golf," Geiberger said. "His short game was solid and he scored well, even though the last two rounds he just kind of held things together. His game is getting more complete."
Putnam (University Place, Wash./Life Christian Academy) moved up 12 spots in the final standings thanks to a 3-under 69, the best by any Wave during the three rounds. He tied for 13th place with a 1-under 215 (72-74-69). Putnam had four birdies and one bogey on the day. It was his seventh top 20 performance in eight tournaments this year, and the 35th in 44 career events.
"Andrew didn't have a lot of control off the tee, wasn't making putts, and didn't get a lot of momentum going," Geiberger said. "He has a good track record on this course but he never really got some momentum until today."
Senior Andrew Widmar (El Paso, Texas/Cathedral HS) tied for 57th at 229 (78-74-77), sophomore Johnny Mac Arthur (Newhall, Calif./Hart HS) tied for 63rd at 230 (75-81-74) and senior Austyn Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep) tied for 83rd at 237 (78-78-81). Mac Arthur had four birdies during his round today.
The Waves are next in action at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas, on April 4-5.
