Final Results
BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Pepperdine sophomore
Grace Na won her second collegiate title on Wednesday with a two-stroke victory at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. The Waves' women's golf team ended up in a tie for second place.
Third-round scores at the par-72 Boulder Creek Golf Club skyrocketed due to very windy conditions and despite a final-round team score of 310, the Waves kept their position from the previous round and wound up tied with San Diego State at 884 (281-293-310). UC Davis ended up winning the tournament with an 869.
Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS), a sophomore who previously won the West Coast Conference Championships this past spring, finished with a career-best 7-under 209 and led wire-to-wire. She tied an NCAA record with a 9-under 63 on Monday, then had an even-par 72 yesterday.
Her 2-over 74 was one of the better rounds by anyone in the field on Wednesday and was enough to keep the lead. She had an early birdie and bogey, then posted 12 straight pars and fortunately had enough cushion to take bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes.
Na led all players with 15 birdies over the three days and was second overall in par-4 scoring (1-under) and par-5 scoring (4-under).
Playing as an individual, sophomore Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) tied for sixth place at 218 (69-69-80). Senior Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) also recorded a top-20 finish with her tie for 16th place at 221 (71-72-78).
Freshman Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) tied for 43rd place at 228 (74-73-81), sophomore Danielle Gillaspy (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph's HS) tied for 55th place at 232 (73-80-79) and freshman Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) tied for 63rd place at 233 (78-76-79).
Increasingly difficult conditions saw the average score for all players go from 73.91 to 75.52 to 79.56 for each round.
The Waves' final competition of the fall season is next week's Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas (Oct. 31-Nov. 2).
