MALIBU, Calif. - Senior Chelsea Wishard (Lawai, Hawai'i/Kauai HS) of the Pepperdine women's cross country team was voted onto the West Coast Conference's Preseason All-Conference Team Thursday by the league's eight head coaches. Wishard has finished third at the WCC Championships the past two years and is expected to place just as high in 2010.
"Chelsea is stronger than ever and plans to go out in style," Pepperdine head coach Robert Radnoti said. "She had a successful track season, which I'm sure she is determined to build on, and I look forward to watching her perform at her best at WCCs and getting her qualified for NCAAs."
A 2010 team captain, Wishard finished last year's conference championship course with a 6K time of 21:14 as she became the first Wave program history to post consecutive top-10 showings at Crystal Springs. Her mark was also 53 seconds faster than her previous career best, which she first established at the 2008 meet.
During the 2010 outdoor track season, Wishard broke a pair of school records in the 1500 and 3000-meter runs, posting respective times of 4:39.35 and 10:04.01. She also has held the Pepperdine varsity mark in the 800m of 2:19.70 since April of 2008.
Pepperdine cross country begins its fifth-season under Radnoti on Wednesday night, Sept. 1 as the Waves play host to San Diego and Cal State Bakersfield at the Malibu Oceanside Open. The men's 5K run begins at 6 p.m. at Alumni Park while the women's race is slated to start 30 minutes afterward.
