Lyons Traveling to South Korea on Fulbright Scholarship

MALIBU, Calif. - Cross country runner and Pepperdine graduate Liz Lyons (West Warwick, R.I./St. Mary's Academy) recently received a Fulbright Scholarship and will be living in South Korea starting this July as part of a year-long project.
Lyon's project proposal involves teaching English to Korean high school students through a recipe exchange with other high school students in the United States. Activities involve translating recipes from Korean into English to send to the American students, and later translating the recipes they receive back from the United States into Korean.
"I hope the exchange allows the Korean students to learn English and that the students in both countries will learn more about each others' cultures," said Lyons, who graduated from Pepperdine last December with a degree in political science. "I'm really excited to be going to South Korea and experience a new culture, but also a little nervous because I have only recently begun studying Korean so my language skills are very basic."
Lyons will enter the Wake Forest School of Law in the fall of 2011 following her time overseas. Her entire body of accomplishments as a Wave has made her former head coach Robert Radnoti very proud of her.
"Liz was our slowest runner when she arrived at Pepperdine, and remained so through her junior year," he said. "But she worked all four years, never missed a practice, continued to get her miles in and did everything I asked of her last summer. She surprised me in our first race by finishing in the top five, and at the end of the season she was representing Pepperdine at our conference championships and NCAA West Regionals."
Lyons is currently residing in Rhode Island and is training to run a marathon in Vermont on May 31 with a local track club.
