The Waves quickly nabbed the first point with a sweep of all three doubles matches. The tandem of junior Anamika Bhargava (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS) and freshman Marie Zalameda (Los Angeles, Calif./Beverly Hills HS) led the way with an 8-3 victory at #1 doubles.
In singles, sophomore Ali Walters (Newport Beach, Calf./Creekside Chrisian HS) got things started for the Waves by taking the #3 match over USF's Cecilia Gratian, 6-1, 6-0. Bhargava followed suit at #2 with a 6-0, 6-3 singles win, but USF's Jennifer-Lee Heinser upset freshman Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista), 6-1, 6-1, in the #1 match.
Pepperdine took two of the final three singles matches to earn the 5-2 victory.
"After sweeping doubles, I thought we would cruise through singles," Pepperdine Coach Gualberto Escudero said. "But we still won, which was great because we beat a team that we are likely to play again in the conference tournament. We now know exactly what we'll be facing."
On Friday (April 16), the Waves will wrap up the regular season with a home match against #33 Long Beach State at 1:30 p.m.
