Women's Tennis Edges SDSU, 4-3

MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's tennis team won the first four singles matches and went on to defeat San Diego State, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon.

Pepperdine, ranked #50 in the nation, improved its record to 6-9 as San Diego State, #64 in the country, fell to 7-6.

After San Diego State won two of three matches in doubles play to take the first point of the match, Pepperdine responded with a victory in each of the first four singles matches to clinch the win.

"We did what we had to do," Pepperdine Coach Gualberto Escudero said. "Arianna (Colffer) regained some confidence. When she got control of her match, she played well."

In a matchup of two ranked players competing at #2 singles, freshman Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif.), ranked #83 in the country, knocked off #80 Alicia Aguilar in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. Freshman teammate Marie Zalameda (Los Angeles, Calif.) won at #4 singles with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Roxanne Ellison.

Sophomore Andrea Oates (Pretoria, South Africa) and senior Tania Rice (Burlington, Ont., Canada) won at #5 and #6 singles to clinch the victory.

In the most thrilling match of the day, junior Anamika Bhargava (Collierville, Tenn.) gave a valiant effort before succumbing to #71 Julia Trunk 6-4, 6-7 (2), 1-0 (14-12) at #1 singles. Bhargava trailed 4-3, 5-4 and 6-5 in the second set before breaking the serve of Trunk each time and eventually winning the second set tie-break, 7-2. Trunk rallied from a 9-5 match-point deficit to capture the super tie-break in the third set, 14-12.

The Waves next host #9 California on Tuesday (Mar. 23) at 1:30 p.m.
