EUGENE, Ore. - Pepperdine senior Chelsea Wishard (Lawai, Hawai'i/Kauai HS) placed 22nd with a personal best 6K time of 20:39 Saturday at the NCAA West Regional Cross Country Championships, hosted by the University of Oregon at the Springfield Country Club.
Her top-25 finish (among 221 entrants) in the misty and cool conditions earned her a place on the All-NCAA West Regional Team.
Wishard is now poised to become the Waves' first NCAA Championship qualifier but she won't know for sure until the complete field is announced late Sunday afternoon. Head coach Robert Radnoti speculated that if both Cal and UC Santa Barbara advance to next Monday's national meet in Terre Haute, Ind., as at-large selections, then Wishard will move up into the one of the top-four slots reserved for individuals whose teams are non-qualifiers.
"Chelsea has had such an outstanding career that I would love to see her get one more chance to finish on top," he said, "but it's all up to the computers now to figure if she's moving on to nationals."
As a team, Pepperdine placed 20th of 31 teams with 589 points and bested WCC rivals Santa Clara (603) and San Diego (721) along the way - two teams that knocked the Waves down to sixth in late October at the conference championships.
Junior Lauren Lodge (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS) was the Waves' second-fastest finisher, completing the course with a 34th-place time of 20:57. Also coming across the finish line for the Waves were junior Emily Branch (22:56.10), freshman Adrianna Davies (23:08.56) and juniors Aneasha Lawrence (23:13.36), Hannah DeWalt (23:23.41) and Paige Mobley (23:46.64).
"The girls were in great spirits after the race," Radnoti said. "They all had a good season and I'm proud of the way they've represented the school as student-athletes."
