Women's Tennis Edges UNLV, 4-3

MALIBU, Calif. - The #40 Pepperdine women's tennis team battled back to win its first match of the season, a 4-3 result over #41 UNLV on Saturday night in a consolation match as part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend at UCLA.

The Waves went into a hole by losing the doubles point, and trailed 3-2 with two singles matches in progress that were both in the third set. But freshman Marie Zalameda (Los Angeles, Calif./Beverly Hills HS) pulled out a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win at #5 singles to even things up, and junior Anamika Bhargava (Collierville, Tenn.) won the match with a 6-2, 6-7, 7-5 victory at #3 singles.

Sophomore Ali Walters (Newport Beach, Calif./Creekside Christian HS) posted an excellent win at #2 singles, beating 44th-ranked Jana Albers in three sets, while senior Tania Rice (Burlington, Ont., Canada) won in straight sets at #6 singles.

Pepperdine (1-2) will next play at USC on Thursday (Feb. 4) at 1:30 p.m., and then has its home opener on Saturday (Feb. 6) against Rice at 10 a.m.
