HONOLULU, Hawaii - The #25 Pepperdine women's volleyball team lost the opener of a two-match series at #4 Hawaii on Friday night, 25-18, 25-20, 25-21.
The Waves (7-4) and the Rainbow Wahine (8-2) meet one more time on Saturday night in the Stan Sheriff Center at 7 p.m. HT/10 p.m. PT.
Pepperdine put together a strong defensive effort against a Hawaii team that entered the match hitting .301 for the season. Behind 18 digs by sophomore libero Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) and 13 from sophomore outside hitter Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS), the Waves held the Rainbow Wahine to .183 hitting.
Unfortunately for the Waves, however, they hit .119 as a team. Frederick had a team-high 11 kills, while senior outside hitter Rachel Grochmal (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) had nine.
The Waves got off to a tough start in the first set, falling behind 13-3 and 22-9. Pepperdine did make a nice run from there, going on a 7-1 run to cut the deficit to 23-16. Sophomore opposite Kristen Seaton (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo HS) had two kills and a block assist to spark the run. But Hawaii would end the first set a few points later and held a .226-.067 hitting advantage in the first set.
After falling behind 5-2 in the second set, the Waves scored five straight to take a two-point lead. Three Hawaii attack errors were followed by kills by freshman middle blocker Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) and Frederick. The Rainbow Wahine then went on a 6-1 run, however, taking the lead for good at 11-8 en route to winning by five. The second set's hitting saw Hawaii with a .172-.154 edge.
The third set was close for a while. A kill by senior setter Kiah Fiers (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Peninsula HS) made it 15-15, and neither side had led by more than two points at that time. But Hawaii scored the next three points, and later went up 22-17. The Rainbow Wahine outhit the Waves .163-.143 in the third set.
Hawaii was led by Kanani Danielson's 11 kills, Brittany Hewitt's nine blocks and Elizabeth Ka'aihue's 17 digs.
