XC Completes Season at NCAA West Regionals

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Sophomores Lauren Lodge (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS) and Kenny Smith (Willits, Calif./Willits HS) were Pepperdine's lead runners Saturday at the NCAA West Regional Cross Country Championships hosted by Oregon at the Springfield (Ore.) Country Club.
Lodge completed her first 6K course of the season in 23:11.09, while Smith crossed the 10K trail's finish line in 33.28.19. Saturday's competitions marked the end of the Waves' 2009 campaign.
As a team, the Pepperdine women finished 25th with 742 points and the men came in 22nd with 698 points, once again beating West Coast Conference rivals Saint Mary's (713 points) and San Diego (741 points.)
Top-ranked Washington, led by NCAA West Regional individual champion Kendra Schaaf, won the race with 25 points, followed by Oregon's 66. No. 14 Stanford was third with 94 points.
Stanford's Chris Derrick pushed ahead past teammate Elliot Heath at the end of the men's race to win the individual title with a winning time of 30:38.84. Heath finished just inches behind with a time of 30:38.96.
Stanford's top five of Derrick, Heath, Justin Marpole-Bird, Brendan Gregg and Miles Unterreiner combined for 27 team points, with No. 7 Portland second with 84 points and No. 3 Oregon third with 109 points.
