Waves Beat Loyola Marymount in Four Sets

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's volleyball team made a short trip down the coast to defeat rival Loyola Marymount in four sets (25-19, 25-19, 23-25, 25-11) in West Coast Conference play at Gersten Pavilion on Friday night.

Pepperdine improved to 15-10 overall and 8-4 in the WCC with two regular-season matches remaining. The Waves also swept the season series from LMU (12-14, 3-9) and have won seven in a row, 10 of the last 11 and 16 of the last 18 in the series.

Additionally, with the road victory, Pepperdine adds 1.5 points to its total for the newly created PCH Challenge, a season-long competition between the two local rivals. The Waves now lead the series, 4.0-3.5.

Sophomore middle blocker Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) pounded down a match-high 14 kills while hitting .464 (14-1-28). She also had a match-high for blocks.

Senior outside hitter Rachel Grochmal (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) and freshman outside hitter Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) both posted double-doubles. Grochmal had 12 kills and 14 digs, while Racich had 10 kills and 12 digs.

Freshman middle blocker Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) contributed 10 errorless kills while hitting .476 (10-0-21). Senior setter Kiah Fiers (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Peninsula HS) had 40 assists and helped Pepperdine to a .285 team hitting percentage.

Sophomore outside hitter Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) and sophomore libero Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) played big defensive roles. Frederick had a career-high 22 digs, while Robinson added 21.

The Waves held LMU to .133 hitting for the match. After being edged in the third set, Pepperdine made sure the fourth set wasn't close, hitting a match-best .481 (15-2-27) while holding LMU to a negative-.038 (6-7-26).

Pepperdine wraps up the regular season on the road next week with matches at Santa Clara (Thursday, Nov. 19) and San Francisco (Saturday, Nov. 21).
