Pepperdine-San Diego Box Score
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - In front of an ESPNU audience, the Pepperdine women's volleyball team swept #19 San Diego for the second time this season, 36-34, 25-17, 25-18, in a West Coast Conference match on Thursday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Combined with the first win back in Firestone Fieldhouse on Oct. 3, Pepperdine (12-9, 5-3 WCC) swept the season series against USD (14-5, 6-2 WCC) for the first time since 2003. That was also the last time the Waves beat the Toreros on the road.
Sophomore middle blocker Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) continued her hot play, collecting a team-high 14 kills with a .480 hitting percentage (14-2-25) to go with four blocks.
Senior outside hitter Rachel Grochmal (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) had 11 kills and 10 digs for her team-high seventh double-double of the season. Sophomore outside hitter Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) had her third double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs.
Senior setter Kiah Fiers (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Peninsula HS) had 42 assists, nine digs, six kills and five blocks, sophomore libero Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) had 21 digs and freshman middle blocker Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) added nine kills.
The Waves had an enormous .316-.101 edge in hitting and also had a 9-2 advantage in blocks.
The Waves made a great comeback to win the first set and also fought off six set points as it went far beyond the usual 25 points. The Toreros took early leads of 8-4 and 10-5, and were still up by four at 23-19. But Pepperdine scored the next four points on kills by Adelhelm and Grochmal and two USD attack errors, tying the set. As the set moved past regulation, both schools had multiple chances to end it. Tied 34-34, a kill by Frederick gave Pepperdine its sixth set point, and Adelhelm finally put the Toreros away with a kill.
"We had to settle down and stop making errors in the first set," Pepperdine Coach Nina Matthies said. "At the end of the set, that's what we did. We started to let the game come to us and take care of the ball. We blocked well tonight and took them out of their offense. We channeled the ball to our defense, which played great. We got touches and kept the ball in play."
The second set was tied 14 times, last at 17-17. But the Waves then silenced the home crowd by scoring eight straight points to take the set. Adelhelm had a kill, Grochmal had a block and Frederick had a kill, prompting a Torero timeout. Three straight USD attack errors made it 23-17 and led to another timeout. Grochmal and Adelhelm then closed things out with kills.
Pepperdine had an 11-10 lead in the third set and scored six of the next seven points to grab a 17-11 lead. Adelhelm had a kill and ace early in the spurt. USD got no closer than four points the rest of the way.
USD began the night tied for first place in the WCC with Saint Mary's. The Waves next head to the Bay Area to take on the Gaels on Saturday (Oct. 31) at 1 p.m. in yet another crucial match as Pepperdine attempts to get back into the title race.
"We just need to play well," Matthies said. "This is the last half of conference play. We have to dig our heels in and say we're not losing again."
