PORTLAND, Oregon – Junior Brieanna Carroll led the Pepperdine women’s cross country team to a strong third-place finish with 89 points at the West Coast Preview, hosted by University of Portland, Saturday afternoon. Leading the Waves men’s cross country team to a fourth place finish with 91 points, was senior Chris Ogle.
WCC's Portland won the women’s team title with 17 points. Bobeyea Krishneck of Portland was the individual title winner with a time of 21:43. WCC rival Gonzaga finished sixth with 165 points.
.Carroll (Pusan, South Korea/ Pusan American HS) finished 12th (22:38) out of a field of 81 women in the 6 kilometer race. Finishing second for the Waves and 20th overall was freshman Chelsea Wishard (Lawai, Hawaii/ Kauai HS) in 23:14. Freshman Lilly Spratt (Old Lyme, Conn./ Lyme Old Lyme HS) was 25th with a time of 23:30. Junior Courtney Young (Encinitas, Calif./ La Costa HS) followed with a time of 23:38 (29th) and junior Amanda Gordon (Oak Harbor, Wash./Oak Harbor HS) was the fifth Pepperdine finisher (32nd) in a time of 23:53.
“The course was difficult in that the terrain changed from asphalt to grass to dirt and back again,” said Carroll. “It was hard to maintain a steady rhythm.”
WCC's Portland captured the 8 kilometer men’s race team title with 31 points. Colby Litzenberger of Gonzaga was the individual winner in a time of 25:05.WCC's Gonzaga finished sixth with 126 points,
Ogle (Tucson, Ariz./ Mountain View HS) ran with the lead pack for three miles and finished 12th out of 90 runners in a time of 25:50. Freshman Conrad Wozniak (15th) crossed the line in 26:04. Sophomore Garrett Reim (Fieldcrest, Wash./ Curtis HS) was 19th in a time of 26:29 followed by freshman David Williams (Manhattan Beach, Calif./ Mira Costa HS) in 22nd place in 26:40. Finishing fifth for the Waves in 24th place was freshman Seth Allison (Canyon, Texas/ Canyon HS) with a time of 26:45.
“The top five men went out and ran with the leaders for the first mile. I like their attitude and their willingness to compete with the top runners,” said head coach Robert Radnoti “We’re a young team and I think we opened some eyes today.”
Next Saturday, September 22nd, the Waves host the Pepperdine Invitational at Alumni Park. The first race begins at 7:30 a.m.
