Waves Coast to Win Over Gonzaga

Malibu, Calif. - The top-seeded Pepperdine men's tennis team cruised to an opening round victory with a brief 4-0 win over No. 8 Gonzaga in the first match of the West Coast Conference tournament Friday in Malibu, Calif.
Winning the doubles point with identical 8-1 wins from Lovrak/Berg and Johnson/Borzenski, the Waves took a 1-0 lead.
Singles matches ended before the Bulldogs got on the board as Ivor Lovrak shutout Reid Arthur at number four (6-0, 6-0), to put the Waves two wins away from victory.
Pepperdine didn't have to wait long for those wins as Scott Doerner and Pedro Rico followed up winning just minutes after Lovrak. Rico notched a 6-2, 6-2 win over Dru Ernst, before Scott Doerner followed up his 6-2 first set with a perfect 6-0 second to beat Bryce Cooper.
At the time the match was decided and stopped three other Waves led in their singles matches. Richard Johnson, Alexis Rafidison and Kevin Borzenski all won their first sets.
The Waves improve to 19-2 on the season and will await the winner of Friday's match between Santa Clara and Loyola Marymount. Pepperdine will take on Santa Clara/Loyola Marymount at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
