MALIBU, Calif. - In what took a total team effort, the ninth-ranked Waves (1-0) defeated the University of British Columbia (UBC), 3-1, in an exhibition match at Firestone Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon. Game scores were 30-27, 19-30, 30-28, and 30-26.
The competition was apart of the 2004 Courtyard Marriott Marina del Rey Beach Classic. Pepperdine will battle top-ranked USC in the championship match at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow live on CSTV. Georgia and UBC will square off at 9:45 a.m.
The Waves relied on senior Katy Daly and sophomore Sophia Milo to get the job done. The pair combined for 46 of the team's 82 total kills. Daly pitched in a match-high 24 kills (24-58, .190 hitting percentage), eight digs, two block solos and a match-high 26.0 points. Milo hit .359 percent, completing 22 kills on 39 attempts. She totaled three blocks (1-2).
Freshman Lecca Roberts and senior Kristen Shultz registered double-digit kills. Roberts had 12, while Shultz followed with 10 and hit .375 percent. Christina Hinds had 25 digs, adding to her 33 achieved last night against Georgia, and Kekai Crabbed supplied 10, respectively.
