Despite opening the 2004 season with a 2-7 record, the Pepperdine women's volleyball team will have 42 reasons to start the season over this weekend when it opens West Coast Conference play Friday night in San Francisco, Calif. The Waves enter WCC play having not lost a conference match since the end of the 2000 season - a span of 42 matches.
Junior Katy Daly leads the Pepperdine offense accounting for 28 percent of the teams offense recording 151 kills for a 4.31 per-game average, which ranks third in the WCC. Senior Christina Hinds ranks 26th in the NCAA and leads the conference in digs posting a 5.17 per-game average in leading the Waves defense, while Sophia Milo and Melissa Mehlhorn are averaging 1.20 and 1.11 blocks-per-contest, respectively.
San Francisco (7-9, 0-0 WCC) heads into conference play riding a three-match win streak after claiming first place at the TCU tournament last weekend. The Dons are led by Theresa Hart who is averaging 3.92 kills per game and has a team-best 22 service aces and Stephanie Voelkers who has recorded 3.48 kills-per-contest and a team-leading 3.31 digs-per-game.
Saint Mary's (10-1, 0-0 WCC) are off to the best start in school history with the lone blemish on its record coming at the hands of Utah. Lindsey Bogason leads the Gaels with 155 kills, but the team's strength is its ability to block the ball. The team is averaging 3.33 block-per-game, second in the WCC and ranks 14th in the NCAA.
The Waves are a combined 70-2 under Head Coach Nina Matthies against San Francisco and Saint Mary's. Both Friday and Saturday's matches are scheduled for a 7:00 pm (PDT) first-serve and can be followed via GameTracker at www.pepperdinesports.com.
