MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's volleyball team slipped to 1-3 on the season and dropped its third consecutive match Friday night as it was swept by the University of Arizona, 30-23, 30-24, 30-25, to close out action on day one of the Four Point University Wildcat Classic in Tucson, Ariz.
Arizona's (4-2) efficiency would seal the Waves fate hitting at a .333 clip as a team. Jennifer Abernathy's 21 kills led all players, while. Meghan Cumpston added 17 for the 19th-ranked Wildcats. Stephanie Butkus and Kelli Mulvany led the `Cats defense 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
Pepperdine was able to keep all three games close as there were 19 ties but with just five lead changes in the match the Waves were playing catch-up the majority of the night. Sophia Milo would be the lone Wave player to record a double-digit kill total with 14 and for the fourth consecutive match Christina Hinds led the team in digs with 19 and tacked on a match-best four service aces.
The loss marks the first time in the program's history it has lost to the Wildcats in Tucson and the first time since the final three matches of the 1999 season that the Waves have dropped three-consecutive.
Pepperdine will wrap up play in the Wildcat Classic tomorrow morning as it takes on Nicholls State (0-5) at 9:00 a.m. in the McKale Center.
