MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine needed just 95 minutes to dispose of the Loyola Marymount Lions, 3-0, Friday night as the Waves out hit LMU .171-.043 and moved into a fourth-place tie in the West Coast Conference (WCC) standings.
The Waves (8-13, 5-5 WCC) bolted out to a 7-1 lead, and led by seven, 11-4, when the Lions called for a timeout early in game three. Pepperdine extended its lead to 12 with Katy Daly at the service line for a 5-0 Waves' run. After trading points down the stretch, Lecca Roberts and Kristin McClune combined for a block securing the sweep with a 30-18 victory.
Daly and Kristen Shultz were the lone players to log double digit kill nights with 18 and 13, respectively. Four Waves recorded double figure dig efforts as it was Christina Hinds and Daly leading the way with 19, while Shultz chipped in with 12 and Melissa Mehlhorn pitched in 11.
Jania Motton had a team-best nine kills for the Lions who fell to 14-9 (5-5 WCC) on the season.
Pepperdine took a 1-0 lead in the match, taking game one 30-22. Shultz hit at a .286 clip with six kills in the game as the Waves played catch-up in the early goings of the match. Trailing by five, 10-5, Shultz served the game to a 10-all tie forcing LMU to call a timeout. The Waves would take their first lead of the match at 14-13 on one of LMU's eight attack errors in the game, it was a lead Pepperdine would never relinquish. The Lions pulled to within one at 19-18, but Kekai Crabbe would serve Pepperdine to a 7-0 run and the game.
Game three saw nine tie scores and five lead changes but over the final stretch Daly notched three kills lifting Pepperdine to the 30-27 victory. The Waves started fast building a 12-6 lead in the game on a block from Mehlhorn and Sophia Milo. But LMU would answer with an 8-3 run and close the gap to 15-14 and a service ace. The Lions would eventually even the game up at 19-19 but was never able to get past Pepperdine who began its late run with the score knotted at 21-all.
The Waves will have a week off before returning to action in Portland, Ore., on Nov. 12. Pepperdine will play its final road match of the season the following day in Spokane, Wash., against Gonzaga before finishing the 2004 at home against Santa Clara and San Diego.
