MALIBU, Calif. - Sophomore Sophia Milo pounded out 14 kills on 25 swings and had seven blocks Friday night in Portland, Ore., as the Pepperdine women's volleyball team beat up the Portland Pilots, 3-1 in West Coast Conference (WCC) action.
Game one was all Pepperdine (9-13, 6-5 WCC) as the Waves recorded 15 kills on 28 attempts without committing an error in dismantling Portland, 30-6. Pepperdine recorded the first nine points of the game with junior Katy Daly at the service line. Portland was held to minus .136 hitting in the game, while the Waves enjoyed a .536 attack percentage.
Setter Melissa Mehlhorn ran a near flawless offense on the night as four Waves logged double-digit kill efforts led by senior Kristen Shultz's 16 kill, 15 digs performance. Freshman Lecca Roberts equaled Milo's 14 kills, while Daly tacked on 12. As a team, the Waves hit .299 and recorded 70 kills for the match. Kristin McClune tallied nine kills on 20 attempts without an error.
Senior Christina Hinds and Kekai Crabbe controlled the back row, combining for 44 digs, while Mehlhorn, Daly and Shultz notched 15 each.
Portland (10-15, 1-11 WCC) avoided the sweep by pulling out a 32-30 victory in the second game. The game was a tightly contested one from the start as neither team was able to maintain a big lead. A couple of times the Pilots threatened to pull away but the Waves would have an answer. Pepperdine's biggest answer of the night came at game point Portland. The Waves fought off three game-point attempts and erased a 29-27 deficit, earning their own game point. But three consecutive Pilot points gave Portland the win and evened the match up at 1-1.
Any questions of Pepperdine's mentality were quickly laid to rest as the Waves jumped out to a 7-1 advantage in game three. Pepperdine scored 14 of the first 21 points in the game and led by as many as 11 at 20-9 before closing the game with an 11-3 run and a 30-15 victory. Again, Pepperdine was nearly flawless in its offense hitting .356 for the game to Portland's .087.
The Waves continued to roll in game four hitting .349 for the game with 20 kills and just five errors. The game was never even close as Pepperdine led 10-3 and 20-8 before closing out the game 30-19.
Pepperdine will play in its last road match of the season tomorrow night when it takes on Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (PT).
