Doerner Ousted in Singles Semis

Malibu, Calif. - Scott Doerner's bid for a berth in the finals of the Wilson/ITA Regional Tennis Championships fell just points short Sunday. The Pepperdine Junior fell to San Diego State's Armando Carrascosa, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) in the semifinals.
Sunday's match at the Ralphs-Stratus Tennis Center was evenly fought throughout its three hour duration. Doerner got out to a 2-0 lead in the third set, but that was the biggest lead either would see for the rest of the day.
In the tiebreaker each player held serve for the first four points until Carrascosa double faulted to give Doerner the 3-2 edge. After a Doerner winner, he took a two point lead into the changeover.
Carrascosa came out of the changeover hard, forcing an error and hitting three winners for a comeback run. Doerner made up the deficit to tie the game at six, but another changeover hurt Doerner as Carrascosa would secure the next to points and a place in Monday's finals.
Carrascosa will take on UCLA's Ben Kohlloeffel, who defeated fellow Bruin Alberto Francis, 6-4, 6-1 to advance. The finals match has been scheduled for 12:45 p.m. Monday.
Doerner and partner Pedro Rico could not overcome Arizona's Matalonga/O'Grady in Sunday's doubles semifinals matchup. The Wildcats bested the Waves, 8-6.
In the championship match Matalonga/O'Grady fell to UCLA's Francis/Kwinta, 8-4. With the victory the Bruin duo earns a spot in the November 4-7 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship at the University of Michigan.
