MALIBU, Calif. - Setter Melissa Mehlhorn ran a near perfect offense Friday in Pepperdine's West Coast Conference opener as the Waves hit at a season-best .381 clip in a three-game sweep over San Francisco at War Memorial Gym in San Francisco, Calif. The win was improved Pepperdine to 38-1 all-time against the Dons.
Pepperdine (3-7, 1-0 WCC) had three players record double-digit kill totals on the night led by Katy Daly's 18. The San Clemente, Calif. native also finished the night with 11 digs for her team-leading seventh double-double of the year.
San Francisco (7-10, 0-1 WCC) opened the match hitting .220 in dropping the first frame 30-26. KeLicia Shorts and Kristin Hasselberg led the Dons with 10 kills each. Shorts was also responsible for 1.5 of USF's three total blocks.
After committing just two errors on 45 swings with 17 kills (.333) in game one, the Waves recorded 20 kills on 38 attempts with two errors (.474) in cruising to a 30-20 win in game two. Pepperdine would finish off the sweep going away as it hit at a .343 clip in game three, winning 30-23.
Mehlhorn would finish the night with 45 assists and 10 digs for her sixth double-double. Having to play the outside because of injuries, Christina Hinds pounded 11 kills with just one error, while Kristen Shultz finished the match with 10 kills.
Sophomore Kekai Crabbe filled in for Hinds at the Libero position for the third consecutive match and led the team with 12 digs. As a team, Pepperdine notched 10 blocks led by Kristen McClune's six (1 solo, 5 assists). Mehlhorn and Sophia Milo each had four.
Pepperdine will face a tough challenge Saturday night as it takes on a 12-1 (1-0 WCC) Saint Mary's squad. The Waves will be looking to extend their 43-match conference win streak at 7:00 p.m. in McKeon Pavilion.
