MALIBU, Calif. - Off to a 1-2 start in West Coast Conference play, the Pepperdine women's volleyball team will return to the friendly confines of Firestone Fieldhouse this weekend to host the Gonzaga Bulldogs and Portland Pilots on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
The Waves (3-9) have started to find their niche since the start of conference play and boast three players averaging over a block per game in sophomores Sophia Milo (1.55) and Kristin McClune (1.27) and freshman Lecca Roberts (1.50). As a team, Pepperdine is out-blocking its opponents 3.05-2.59 through three league contests.
The offense has been paced by the play of junior Katy Daly who is averaging 4.51 kills-per-game and senior Kristen Shultz (2.85). With 541 assists in the year, setter Melissa Mehlhorn has moved into fourth all-time in career assists with 2,531, while Christina Hinds is just 20 digs shy of moving into third on the career digs list with 1,074.
Gonzaga (4-14, 0-4 WCC) is in the midst of a eight-match losing streak and has not won since September 17. As a team, the Bulldogs are averaging 13.47 kills-per-game, while its opponents are averaging 17.58. Gonzaga has never beaten the Waves in Malibu and is just 3-31 all-time.
Portland (9-7, 0-4 WCC) is paced by the play of Sara Vercruyssen who is averaging 4.08 kills- and 3.21 digs-per-game. As a team, the Pilots are averaging just 1.59 blocks-per-game. Portland has never beaten Pepperdine at Firestone Fieldhouse and trails the all-time series 32-2.
Fans planning on attending Friday night's Midnight Madness are encouraged to come early and support the Waves volleyball team before the basketball festivities.
