From the 2009 Hall of Fame program:

For more than a half-century, John Rettberg has been an influential figure in Pepperdine Athletics, first as a basketball player and later as a benefactor and advisor.

After graduating from Washington High School in Los Angeles, where he earned All-Southern League honors in basketball and was awarded the Outstanding Graduating Senior Award by the American Legion, Rettberg enrolled at Pepperdine in the fall of 1955.

Rettberg would earn All-West Coast Athletic Association honorable mention honors as both a junior and senior. As a senior co-captain, he was one of four Wave players to average double-figures in scoring (11.2 ppg), good for 14th in the conference. He was part of the top-scoring team in the league and the Waves set WCAC records with 854 points and 331 field goals in 12 games.

He scored a career-high 26 points in a contest against Kent State during his senior year. The game was tied 62-62, but he scored the next five points to help lift Pepperdine to a 69-66 win. He also tallied 20 points at Arizona State and 19 against Loyola Marymount that same year.

Rettberg was a reliable shooter for the Waves. As a senior he was fourth in the conference in field goal percentage (44.2%). As a sophomore he led the WCAC in free throw percentage (82.6%). He averaged 9.2 points as a junior (fifth on the team) and 8.9 points as a sophomore (third on the team).

He spent 33 years with the Northrop Grumman Corporation before retiring in 1995. He began his career there as an engineering clerk and prior to his retirement had risen to the position of Vice President and Treasurer of the Corporation. His responsibilities as Treasurer included mergers and acquisitions, cash management, banking and investment banking relations, risk management, pension and savings plan administration and investment manager oversight.

He currently serves as a Trustee on the J.P. Morgan Chase-managed J.F. China mutual fund. In the past, he has served on other J.P. Morgan Chase mutual fund boards. He is a past Director and Chief Financial Officer for the Network of Evangelical Women in Ministry in Southern California and has previously served on the Board of Directors for the Vari-Lite Corporation, the Enalasys Corporation, the Junior Achievement Foundation and the Independent Colleges of Southern California.

Rettberg continued his association with Pepperdine after he graduated with a degree in business administration from the Los Angeles campus in 1959. He currently serves the University as a member of the Athletics Board, and was its Chairman from 2005-08. He is a past President and board member of the Pepperdine Alumni Association and was a founding member of the Alumni Leadership Council and the Seaver Board of Visitors. He has been honored by the University with a Distinguished Alumnus Award and the Olaf Tegner Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service.

He and his wife Jackie (also a Pepperdine graduate) have been married since 1959 and reside in Newport Beach, Calif. They have two sons, two daughters-in-law and five grandchildren.
