Fielding perhaps the best-ever team in the program’s history, Pepperdine defeated Ball State 15-2, 15-2, 15-7 in the semifinals and local rival USC in the championship by scores of 10-15, 15-10, 15-7, 15-13 at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion to claim its second NCAA title. The Waves had advanced to the championship match in 1983 and 1984, but were beaten both times by UCLA.

The championship was a perfect farewell gift for Pepperdine head coach Marv Dunphy, who then took a sabbatical from the Waves to coach the U.S. National Team.

Pepperdine earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships after claiming the California Intercollegiate Volleyball Association title with a perfect 18-0 mark.

Bob Ctvrtlik was selected the Most Valuable Player of the NCAA Championships and was joined on the all-tournament squad by teammates Mike Fitzgerald, Matt Rigg and Troy Tanner.

Pepperdine completed the season with a sparkling 25-2 record (13-1 at home) and its third conference title.

Ctvrtlik was named Volleyball Magazine’s National Player of the Year and he, Rigg and Rob Scott were named All-American first teamers. Ctvrtlik (first team), Rigg (first team), Scott (second team), Mark Arnold (third team), Fitzgerald (third team) and Tanner (third team) were named All-CIVA.
