MILAN, Italy – Pepperdine men's tennis alumnus Sebastian Fanselow defeated 98th-ranked Paolo Lorenzi in the second round of the ATP Challenger on Tuesday afternoon, marking his first win over a top-100 ATP opponent.
Â
In the match, Fanselow defeated Lorenzi by way of a 6-4, 7-5 (5) score and will play Aslan Karatsev of Russia on Wednesday, who beat the #270 player in Gian Marco Moroni in the round of 16.
Â
Fanselow, a native of Essen, Germany, competed for the Waves from 2009-2013, where he led Pepperdine to the NCAA semifinals in 2012. One of the most decorated players in the Waves' history, Fanselow accrued awards such as the ITA National Player to Watch and the USTA/ITA Sportsmanship Award in 2012, as well as the WCC Player of the Year in 2012 and 2013 and reached the NCAA singles semifinals in 2013.
Â
Most recently, Fanselow returned to Malibu during the 2018-19 season as a volunteer assistant coach for the men's tennis program under first-year head coach Adam Schaechterle.
Â
"Our guys are so fortunate to work with (Sebastian) and train with him," Schaechterle said. "They see every day what it takes to be a Grand Slam level pro. It just shows how Pepperdine has the opportunity to develop players into top-100 contenders."
Â
Schaechterle also credited all-time coaching great Adam Steinberg for leading and developing Fanselow during his tenure. Steinberg held the reins as Pepperdine head coach from 2003-2014 while leading the Waves to their only national championship in 2006 and accruing the 2006 ITA National Coach of the Year award.
