MALIBU, Calif. " The No. 10 Pepperdine women's soccer team fell for the first time this season, dropping a 1-0 decision at home to Iowa State on Sunday. The lone goal given up in the game was the first the Waves have conceded this year, breaking a 324 scoreless minute streak.
Pepperdine falls to 3-1-0 on the year while Iowa State moves to 3-1-0 as well. The Cyclones scored in the 50th minute and were able to hold the Waves off the rest of the way.
Pepperdine outshot Iowa State 12-7 in the game, putting two balls on target, while the goal scored was the only shot on goal for the visitors.
Klasey Medelberg netted the game-winner for Iowa State early in the second half. The Cyclones won a corner kick and after Taylor Wagner sent the ball into the box, Haley Albert headed the ball back across the goal and to Medelberg's waiting foot at the near post. It was the first goal of the season for Medelberg.
The Waves had their chances down the stretch, getting probably their best opportunities on a pair of headers. Danielle Thomas (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS) came charging down the center of the box on a free kick and headed a ball just wide left in the 56th minute. In the 66th minute Kristen Rodriguez (Inglewood, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) got a good cross from Meghan Schoen (Sherwood, Ore./Sherwood HS) and hit it wide to the left as well from deep inside the box.
The Waves got off several long shots late in the half, but were never able to manufacture the scoring opportunity they needed.
Playing both up top and as an outside defender, Hailey Harbison (Rancho Penasquitos, Calif./Westview HS) matched Rodriguez for the team lead with three shots in the game. Harbison put one on target from just outside the box in the 85th minute, but it was right at the Cyclone's keeper.
The Waves have outshot their opponents in each game this season. Pepperdine did need to go to overtime in its first two contests before scoring, but was coming off a 2-0 win over No. 13 Wisconsin on Friday in which the team scored twice in the first half.
Pepperdine hosts Toledo on Friday before welcoming No. 2 Virginia to Tari Frahm Rokus Field on Sunday.
