Pepperdine-Detroit Box Score
MALIBU, Calif. - Sophomore forward Anisa Guajardo had a goal and two assists and sophomore midfielder Ana Pontes scored her first collegiate goal to highlight the Pepperdine women's soccer team's 4-0 home victory over Detroit on Sunday.
The Waves improved to 3-2 and head coach Tim Ward was happy with his team's response after a 2-1 loss at Cal State Northridge on Friday night, which saw a late own goal send Pepperdine to defeat.
"I really don't remember the last time we won a game 4-0," he said. "It was the perfect response after Friday night. We didn't lose to a bad team, but it was just the manner and the timing and the cruelty of an own goal. But we played great today and had all the answers. We were outstanding and the quality of our goals was fantastic. As long as we continue to grow, we'll be fine."
Guajardo (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan HS) notched the first two assists of her career, which included Pepperdine's only goal of the first half. After receiving the ball in the middle of the box, she waited, then found junior forward Laura Cole (Whittier, Calif./La Habra HS) racing in from the left side. Cole took the pass and beat the goalkeeper to the right for her third goal of the season and ninth of her career in the 30th minute.
Though Pepperdine dominated the first half by an 11-2 shot count, it was actually the Titans (2-2-1) that had the best opportunities early. In the eighth minute, Kaitlyn Quarrell got free in the box and unleashed a hard shot that Pepperdine sophomore goalkeeper Roxanne Barker (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) had to tip over the bar. On the ensuing corner kick, the Titans' Rebekah Dornbos received the ball at the far post but her open shot was directed right at Barker.
After that, the Titans would only muster one more shot the entire match as Pepperdine enjoyed an 18-3 edge in shots for the game (12-2 in shots on goal).
The Waves' three second-half goals came all came within a 15-minute span. In the 51st minute, junior defender Myriah Stockman (Sandy, Utah/Brighton HS) sent in a free kick toward the goal from the right-hand side, and the Titan goalkeeper was unable to hold onto the ball. Pontes (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake HS) was in the right place at the right time to poke the ball home, notching her first career goal to make it 2-0 in favor of the Waves.
Guajardo got on the scoreboard for her team-high fourth time in five games with her goal in the 55th minute. Junior midfielder Rebecca Klamser (Ventura, Calif./Buena HS) played a ball into the box from the right side, and Guajardo ran onto it and took a quick shot that beat the keeper. It was Guajardo's sixth career tally.
Guajardo also had a hand in Pepperdine's final goal, as her pass helped junior forward Michelle Spacciapolli (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic/Boston College) get ahead of the pack. Spacciapolli was able to muscle off one defender, then beat the onrushing goalkeeper in the 65th minute for her second goal of the season and the sixth of her Pepperdine career.
Barker and freshman Lacie Carver (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) combined for the shutout, Pepperdine's second this season.
The Waves are home again next weekend with matches against UC Irvine (Friday, Sept. 10, 3 p.m.) and Dartmouth (Sunday, Sept. 12, 1 p.m.).
