MALIBU, Calif. - Sophomore goalkeeper Roxanne Barker easily eclipsed her career high with 10 saves, helping the Pepperdine women's soccer team to a 1-1 tie with visiting UC Irvine on Friday at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.

Junior forward Laura Cole (Whittier, Calif./La Habra HS) gave Pepperdine (3-2-1) the lead with a 71st minute goal, but UCI's Tanya Taylor recorded the equalizer in the 85th minute.

"I'm disappointed we didn't kill the game off, but that's a good UCI team," Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said. "That's maybe the best team we've played all year. It's unfortunate to concede a late goal like that, but we're a young team and we have to grow from it. We didn't have our best performance and our energy could have been better, but it's nice not to lose when you don't have your best effort. We didn't play poorly, but we need to create more offensively and be more sophisticated."

The Anteaters (3-1-2) enjoyed a 16-5 shot advantage for the match. UCI had numerous chances, but it was the Waves that struck first with their only shot on goal.

Junior forward Michelle Spacciapolli (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic/Boston College) was fouled just inches outside the 18-yard box and off to the right. With her right foot on the ensuing direct free kick, Cole found just enough room between the left side of UCI's defensive wall and the far post. The ball beat UCI's diving goalkeeper to the net at 70:18 for Cole's team-high-tying fourth goal of the season and 10th of her career.

The Waves are unbeaten (3-0-1) this season when Cole notches a goal, and 0-2 when she's kept off the scoresheet.

But UCI kept up the pressure and was finally rewarded late in the contest. Taylor, who had been a dangerous attacking figure all game long, received a cross from Dana Sanderlin coming in from the right side and one-timed it home from a short distance. It was her fourth goal of the season and it came with 84:32 on the clock. Taylor took seven shots and put four on goal today.

There weren't many scoring chances in overtime, and after a scoreless extra 20 minutes it ended in a tie.

Barker (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) had a previous career high of six saves.

The Waves are home again on Sunday (Sept. 12) against Dartmouth at 1 p.m.
