Pepperdine-Gonzaga Box Score
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Pepperdine women's soccer team's six-match unbeaten streak came to an end on a golden goal as Gonzaga defeated the Waves, 1-0, in West Coast Conference play on Friday afternoon.
The four previous overtime games played by Pepperdine (7-4-4, 0-1-1) this season all ended in ties. But today, Sarah Rhodes' 92nd-minute goal gave the Bulldogs (6-8-1, 1-1-0) the victory.
The Waves dominated the offensive stats in the first half, outshooting the Bulldogs 7-1. But by the end of the game, Pepperdine's shot advantage was just 9-6. Gonzaga scored on the first shot of overtime. The Waves also had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward lamented his team's missed opportunities.
"It looked like we scored a perfectly legitimate goal, but offsides was called, and we hit the post three times," he said. "We did everything to win the game except to score a goal. I'm disappointed. We have to find a way to score. The longer Gonzaga stuck around, the more belief they gained that they could win the game, and they scored a good goal in overtime."
Four of Pepperdine's last five games have gone to overtime.
This was the fourth of five consecutive road games for the Waves, who continue their Pacific Northwest trip with a game at #2 Portland on Sunday (Oct. 17) at 12 p.m. Pepperdine finishes the regular with three of four games at home.
