SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Freshman Callie Payetta (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) scored her third goal in four games and rookie goalkeeper Roxanne Barker (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) made a season-high five saves in Pepperdine's 1-0 win over Utah Sunday afternoon before 692 fans at Ute Field.

The shutout victory was the Waves' fifth of the year as they improved to 6-3, while the Utes dropped to 5-6-1 despite outshooting Pepperdine, 17-13.

"I'm proud of our girls," head coach Tim Ward said. "It's never easy to win at altitude but we showed a lot of guts throughout the match. Utah received multiple free kick opportunities in dangerous areas, but our team wouldn't concede even though its legs were turning to jelly late in the second half. I'm very encouraged by today's performance."

The two clubs combined for 23 shots in the first half, where Barker made all five of her saves and had a teammate stop Lauren Hair's shot at the line. Utah registered five additional second-half shots, however, none were on frame.

Barker's most notable save was a nice diving stop on a Kelly Isleib direct free kick to the upper righthand corner in the third minute.

Pepperdine fired eight of its 13 shots within the first half hour and received all the offense it needed in the 28th minute after Payetta and sophomore Michelle Spacciapolli (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) combined on the eventual game-winner.

Spacciapolli received a pass down the right flank and played the cross to the far post, where Payetta met it with her head back across the face of goal and into the right side netting.

The assist was Spacciapolli's first of the year and increased her team-leading point total to seven.

"This was a run-up play that led to an all-around great goal - great cross by Spach and a great header by Callie," Ward said. "We had two more good looks but Spach just missed the upper corner and Bo (Sophia Medina) flicked up the ball too high."

Payetta led the Waves with four shots. Isleib led all players with six shots and Ute goalkeeper Hannah Turpen made four saves.

The Waves return to action Friday, Oct. 2 with a 3 p.m. home match against nationally ranked UCLA.
