Pepperdine and Arizona State Box Score (Sept. 25, 2009)
TEMPE, Ariz. - Pepperdine's women's soccer team (5-3) lost 1-0 at Arizona State (6-1-2) Friday night before 511 fans at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
Jill Shoquist's first goal of the year in the 50th minute held up as the game-winner as the Waves were limited to six shots, including one in the second half.
Shoquist's goal was scored off a Sierra Joseph free kick that she deflected into the far right post.
"We played great tonight and I think we maybe should have tied," head coach Tim Ward said. "There aren't many differences between their club and ours - the shots were close to being even - but they scored on a broken set piece that was hard to handle and we missed two good looks at the net."
The shutout defeat was Pepperdine's first since Oct. 24 of last year, breaking a streak of 10-straight matches in which the Waves scored at least one goal. Pepperdine's record during this stretch was an impressive 8-2.
Freshman goalkeeper Roxanne Barker (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) made three saves - all in the first half - in the losing effort. Sophomore midfielder Laura Cole (Whittier, Calif./La Habra HS) led the Waves with two shots.
Pepperdine returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. at Utah (5-5-1).
