Pepperdine and Long Beach State Box Score (Sept. 18, 2009)
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Pepperdine women's soccer team lost its second match of the year Friday, dropping a 3-1 decision at Long Beach State in front of 921 fans at George Allen Field.
The defending Big West Champions improved to 4-3 with the victory, which was its first over Pepperdine in six meetings. The loss dropped the Waves to 4-2, snapping their three-game winning streak.
Pepperdine was outshot for the first time this season 13-11, including 11-3 in the first half, as the 49ers lit their end of the scoreboard in the 15th, 40th and 45th minutes. Long Beach's final goal of the first half came with 38 seconds remaining as Shannon Bullock caught Pepperdine freshman goalkeeper Roxanne Barker (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) off the line with a soft chip shot.
Sophomore and Long Beach native Lacey Heck (Wilson HS) played the entire second half but wasn't required to make a save as the Pepperdine defense limited the 49ers to two shots. The Waves offense made some noise in the closing minutes of regulation but a free kick at the top of the 18-yard box sailed high and a header at far post bounced off a defender.
Long Beach State goalkeeper Nicoline Jorgensen finished the match with three saves.
The 49ers grabbed the match's first lead off a flip-style throw-in by Chantel Hubbard at the corner. Hubbard's rainbow toss took one bounce inside the six, where it was hammered home at the far post by UCLA transfer Nicole Sweetman.
Pepperdine tied the match at 1-1 in the 29th minute on freshman Callie Payetta's (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) first score of the season. Sophomore Myriah Stockman (Sandy, Utah/Brighton HS) received credit for the assist after crushing her free kick inside the goal mouth, where Payetta was able to head it inside the far post.
LBSU grabbed the lead back for good eleven minutes later following two corner kick attempts Pepperdine couldn't control. The 49ers' first corner in this series was toed over the line by a Wave defender, which promptly led to a second attempt the home team cashed in on.
Shawna Gordon's second corner took several odd hops inside the 18-yard box, eluding nearly every player until Lindsay Bullock punched it through a hole in the defense and into the back of the net. The goal was Bullock's team-leading third of the year.
The three goals were the most allowed by a Pepperdine team since this time last year when it suffered a 3-1 loss at Wisconsin on Sept. 19.
Pepperdine returns to its home pitch Sunday, Sept. 20 for a 1 p.m. match against Sacramento State. The Waves will be autographing their 2009 team poster following the game as part of AYSO Day at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.
