MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount women's soccer teams played to a double-overtime scoreless tie in front of a season-high crowd of 428 fans Sunday afternoon at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.

The tie was Pepperdine's first of the year, shifting its record to 7-4-1, while LMU moved to 8-3-2. Sunday's match was the West Coast Conference season opener for both teams.

The crosstown rivals have played eight overtime matches over their 16-year history, including five times since 2004. The Waves still lead the series 9-5-4 despite not having beaten the Lions since a 3-2 overtime home victory in 2005.

Their most result served as the third scoreless of this see-saw series.

Pepperdine had all the looks it could handle on offense in registering 23 shots, and turned in its everyday solid performance on defense, holding LMU to nine shots through 110 of minutes of play - but the Waves just could not break Lions' goalkeeper Allyssa Clark, who shutout Pepperdine for the second straight year on the strength of 10 saves.

"Their goalkeeper made some big saves for them today," Pepperdine head coach Tim Ward said. "That was a good stop she made on Michelle Manning's shot in the second half, and really saved the game for her team in blocking Laura Cole's header in overtime."

LMU's defense also held its own in front of Clark, helping to clear a season-high 11 corner kicks taken by Pepperdine. The Waves were presented with three corner kicks in the first half and four more in between the second half and first overtime period.

Pepperdine also had one final breakaway with 48 seconds left in the second overtime, but its quick advantage was stymied by three Lion defenders inside the 18-yard box.

The Lions only had two corner kicks all game as the Waves' controlled the possession on offense while holding the opposition's best attackers in check. LMU fired nine shots with five on frame as freshman goalkeeper Roxanne Barker (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) matched her career high for the fourth-straight match.

Barker has shutout seven opponents this season and lowered her goals-against average to 0.76 following the 0-0 deadlock.

Senior striker Sophia Medina (Downey, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) and sophomore midfielder Cole (Whittier, Calif./La Habra HS) led all players with five shots. Medina also was one of nine starters to play upwards of 100 minutes.

Barker, her entire defensive line, and midfielders Rebecca Klamser (Ventura, Calif./Buena HS), Kelly Reilly (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) and Michelle Spacciapolli (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) all pitched a complete game.

"I'm really proud and pleased with everyone's performances today," Ward said. "This was one of our better matches of the year. LMU is a great team and it created some dangerous moments today, but I think we clearly dominated a majority of the match. Overall, I feel we did enough to win but I'm glad we didn't lose."

As a result of the tie, the Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount soccer teams have split their season point in the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) Challenge. LMU currently leads the challenge 1.5 to .5 through two events. The Lions defeated Pepperdine men's water polo earlier this season at UC San Diego.

The Waves continue their conference season this Friday at home, welcoming nationally ranked Portland to Tari Frahm Rokus Field for a 3 p.m. match. This contest is a designated Community Flyer Game, so fans planning to attend should first pick up a 'Buy 1, Get 1 Free' Flyer from one of the following Malibu restaurants: Lily's Cafe, Malibu Yogurt, Subway or KFC.
